Kasbahs (igherms) served a dual purpose; as foritified granaries and bastions of retreat and defense for the village during times of siege. The Kasbah stands as a sentry on the valley's landscape, representing the tribal strength and unity of the residents, ready to face the challenges of a changing world - together. Zawiya Ahansal region of Morocco.

Zawiya Ahansal region of Morocco.
This region's inhabitants are isolated from basic amenities due to its location in the High Atlas Mountains, a vast range of plateaus, lush valleys, and sheer limestone cliffs. (view small | med | large | orig)

Children commute to school.

Children commute to school.
Many of Zawiya Ahansal's children walk an hour one-way to the local school. This proves difficult in winter, when there can be over a meter of snow on the trail and in spring, when the rivers are raging with runoff. The library will provide a closer learning center for days when it is too dangerous for the young children to walk. (view small | med | large | orig)

This project is being run by a socially-oriented for-profit company.

From time to time, GlobalGiving posts projects run by socially-oriented for-profit companies, whose work includes charitable activities in the public interest. ALL projects on GlobalGiving have a bonafide charitable purpose, and are required to submit extensive documentation and complete a thorough application process. GlobalGiving reviews all applications, and vets the projects to ensure they are legitimate, well-run, and satisfy IRS guidelines for international grantmaking as well as the new voluntary guidelines for anti-terrorism set forth in the Patriot Act. Provided projects meet all these criteria, the IRS allows public foundations such as GlobalGiving to make grants in support of this work.

Projects in this category are required to undergo an expenditure review - meaning they must detail the charitable activities for which they are requesting funding, and provide an actual review of how the funds were spent.
