Summary
Underprivileged children in South Africa do not experience wildlife and the natural environment which can lead to high levels of illegal poaching. This project will fund an outreach program to assist and facilitate establishing Eco-clubs at local schools and provide guidance for running environmental activities and educational programs in these eco-clubs.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Limpopo Province is rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, yet it is known to be the poorest and least educated area of South Africa, with an associated very high level of wildlife poaching. A lack of environmental education at all levels is a key cause of this. Local poor communities see easy access to meat, ivory and firewood just on the other side of a fence. They live near the Kruger National Park and various private nature reserves but never get the chance to visit them.
How will this project solve this problem?
Donations to this project will fund an outreach program to help foster enthusiasm and involvement in wildlife clubs among children from poorer communities. Activities such as litter clean-ups, educational bush-walks, day trips to learn about Eco-Tourism and wildlife sanctuaries will be organised along with assistance in achieving eco-school status, and much more.
Potential Long Term Impact
Children have influence on their peers and elders. Through outreach and fun educational activities this project will instill desire to preserve the environment throughout the community. In time this will reduce pollution and poaching of wildlife in the area. This valuable experience will also open up opportunities and develop interest in youth to the great job opportunities available in eco tourism.
Project Message
I believe that these children will have better future opportunities in nature conservation and Eco tourism jobs. This will help the local community, nature, wildlife and South Africa in general.
