The project will respond to critical shelter needs in southwestern region through distribution of emergency shelter kits to 2,000 families whose homes have been severely damaged or destroyed by the recent earthquake. Primary beneficiaries will include vulnerable groups such as people living with disabilities, lactating and pregnant women, older adults, and women and child headed households, who will also receive training on content and utilization of the shelter kits.
The earthquake that struck southern Haiti resulted in significant destruction to the housing sector. Nearly 53,000 homes were destroyed across the region, and 77,000 others severely damaged. Affected families must shelter in their damaged, dangerous homes, or shelter outside, exposed to weather and health risks. This project will help meet critical shelter needs of 2,000 affected families. Funds raised will contribute to costs of the project which has been partially funded by other partners.
Emergency shelter kits follow international standards to suit the needs of each community. The tools and side materials contribute to the construction of a basic household shelter or to make rapid repairs to a damaged home. Habitat will transport, warehouse, and distribute shelter kits in the target areas; execute post-distribution monitoring to promote accountability and feedback loops; and provide related training and assistance to households on the content and utilization of the kits.
Safe, decent shelter provides a critical platform upon which much of post-disaster assistance is built, including health, water, sanitation, livelihoods, safety, and education interventions. Distribution of 2,000 emergency shelter kits and side items with related supports to households during the relief phase of earthquake response helps place 2,000 affected families (10,000 individuals) on a path to durable, permanent shelter solutions that support health, well-being and resilience.
