Summary
This project combats hunger in Uganda by providing 1000 children the knowledge and skills to cultivate fresh, healthy food through 31 school gardens and community outreach programs.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Each year disasters from prolonged drought and flooding place over 1.5 million people at risk of starvation in Uganda. This project works with 31 schools and their communities in Kabala, Kapchorwa and Mukuno to care for gardens designed to adapt to local climate challenges. The gardens' produce guarantees 1000 school children a heathy meal at school each day and empowers them for life with the skills and knowledge to cultivate food for themselves and their community.
How will this project solve this problem?
At the 31 project schools children learn to cultivate food through classroom lessons and hands on experience in the garden. Activites and events with the wider community promote local agriculture models that combat Uganda's widespread hunger.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will educate and train 1000 school children, improving their nutrition at school, reversing community food shortages and providing valuable life skills to cultivate local vegetables and fruits.
Project Message
"I have been so worried, we're getting old and children don't know how to grow food. With this project I feel better because I know that in the future our children's children will not go hungry."
- Eliazari Magala, Community elder and grandfather
