We offer care and support for 20 children separated by emergencies in addressing their immediate needs. We provide accommodation and food, but most of all we ensure they live in a safe and secure family environment which is essential for their growth and development. Your donation could help to introduce better solutions for children without parental care in Ukraine. It is an antidote to the harmful Soviet-era residential institutions and the social challenges they create.
Due to poverty, child abuse or parental substance misuse children are getting temporarily removed from their families. There is no concept of short-term foster care in Ukraine. When social services identify a risk for the child's well-being, he/she is placed in the institution which is widely acknowledged to be extremely damaging. In many instances, the family crises remain unresolved, and 9 out of 10 children stay in residential care considerably longer than initially intended 6 months' period.
We support 20 children at risk of being deprived of parental care. In Kyiv city and the region we run 5 emergency fostering services which work on four connected streams of activity: 1) immediate care for a child by the emergency foster parents; 2) support services to resolve a family crisis/ emergency causing the child's removal; 3) capacity building for parents in fullfiling their responsibilities; 4) training of the social workers working with children and emergency foster carers
This project is a pioneering opportunity to ensure the most vulnerable children stay in the care of the family and avoid traumas of institualisation, whilst their parents are receiving essential assistance and resources to strengthen their capacity and to become better parents raising and developing their children in the future. Our vision is for this model to spread to form a network of emergency foster carers throughout Ukraine, where children are the priority.
Being an emergency foster carer is a wonderful experience. I can help abandoned children not to be in the institutions, but to have family life from beginning, where they can get individual attention.
