Summary
The Safer World Fund was created by three people who lost loved ones during the 9/11 terrorist acts in 2001. Rather than respond to the tragedy with anger, the founders chose to honor 9/11 victims by helping the people of Afghanistan. The Fund promotes education, health care and economic opportunity to counter the sway of extremists and terrorist tactics. See www.globalgiving.org/saferworld for supported projects.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Education, health care, and economic opportunity counter the influence of extremists in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries by weakening their base of community support. Help us build a world in which the appeal of lives lived in dignity, opportunity, and hope triumphs over the allure of extremism and its use of terrorist tactics.
How will this project solve this problem?
The Fund’s current focus is education, health and devleopment projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries, especially projects for girls and women. Educated, healthy mothers are more likely to raise sons who will build rather than destroy.
Potential Long Term Impact
Promotion of grass-roots development projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries allows the appeal of lives lived in dignity, opportunity, and hope to triumph over the allure of extremism and its use of terrorist tactics.
Project Message
Had we remained engaged in Afghanistan [after the Soviets left], investing in education, health and economic development, the world would be a very different place today.
