Summary

This project provides supports over 100 children from the favela Cidade de Deus. We are building a community that offers academic support, family medicine, and new economic opportunities.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The most successful ways for the children of Cidade de Deus to overcome the hurdles of stigma and social exclusion are through education and economic opportunity. Capoeira Cidadã provides over 120 children with access to a safe and supportive community, educational support classes, and professional development in teaching the art of capoeira, crafting and selling instruments, and performance. This provides them with the essential skills and motivation to succeed.

How will this project solve this problem?

We provide the opportunity daily classes of Capoeira, educational support classes, classes on civic and moral development, and community service projects to children as a reward for attending and succeeding in school. We havea 95% retention rate.

Potential Long Term Impact

Capoiera Cidadã helps at-risk youth to develop their innate capabilities to move beyond the existing cycles of violence and poverty. Youth in the project will also gain concrete skills that will help them lead successful and productive lives.

Project Message

"Empowering youth with education is essential in helping them to create productive places for themselves within their community and the world."
