This program will provide an opportunity for a young Tanzanian woman to attend teacher training college. This will transform her life -- and the lives of thousands of other students -- forever.
In Tanzania, only 5% of girls complete a high school education. The few students who do graduate from secondary school rarely have the resources needed to go on to higher levels of education. Young girls face challenges in finding the funds needed to continue with their education; when forced to choose, parents generally send only their sons to school.
Supporting a young woman in her aspirations to become a teacher, fundamentally changes her life by giving her the chance for sustained employment. She also becomes a powerful role model in her community and for the generation of girls who follow her.
The benefits of girls' education for individuals and families are well-documented. Educated girls are one-third less likely to contract HIV/AIDS; the children of African mothers with 5 years of education have a 40% better chance of living to age 5.
Now that I have the golden chance to obtain an education and study, I now know that I will be able to fulfill my dreams.
