This program will provide an opportunity for a young Tanzanian woman to attend university. This will transform her life ---- forever. Scholars are chosen through a competitive application process from amongst AfricAid's Kisa Leadership Training Program graduates. These young women are the future leaders of Tanzania and will change the world.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
In Tanzania, only 5% of girls complete a high school education. The few students who do graduate from secondary school rarely have the resources needed to go on to higher levels of education. Young girls face challenges in finding the funds needed to continue with their education; when forced to choose, parents generally send only their sons to school.
How will this project solve this problem?
Supporting a young woman in her aspirations to go to university, fundamentally changes her life by giving her the chance for sustained employment. She also becomes a powerful role model in her community and for the generation of girls who follow her.
Potential Long Term Impact
The benefits of girls' education for individuals and families are well-documented. Educated girls are one-third less likely to contract HIV/AIDS; the children of African mothers with 5 years of education have a 40% better chance of living to age 5.
