Victims of sexual violence and abuse are the forgotten people of the forgotten people. Their days are spent searching for help to meet their basic needs, food, clothing and a safe place to live for themselves and their children. Taking these women out for a night of fun, laughter and entertainment provides them a brief escape from their everyday world. Knowing that someone cares enough about them to give them relief, offers them hope, inspiration and encouragement.
One in three women are victims of domestic violence. The Chicago, Illinois Police Department responds to 200,000 domestic violence calls per year. In the Chicagoland area, in the first six months of this year, 57 people have been murdered in domestic violence acts. The problem is unlikely to change, as proven by the fact that 67% of Americans have not talked about domestic violence with their friends or family.
There are agencies in Chicago providing services to domestic violence victims. They offer 24-hour crisis hotlines, shelters, healthcare assistance, legal counseling/advocacy and substance abuse treatment programs. The recipients of these programs work diligently to get themselves and their children to a safe and secure life. At the end of the day, the strife and emotional toll taken on them is tremendous. We offer them a brief, well-deserved escape from their everyday life.
A Night Out's programs give the women hope, pride, inspiration, encouragement and self-respect.The effects of a few hours away from their stressful lives lasts a lifetime. We provide experiences they will never forget. Our services bring them the courage to continue fighting for their lives. A Night Out will provide these important respites to 350 domestic violence victims in 2014. We'lll care for hundreds of their children.Their entire families will benefit from the empowerment of A Night Out.
