More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

One of the world's great paradoxes, malaria was eradicated in many parts of the world during the last century, but its devastating toll has doubled in the world's poorest communities. In Africa, it takes the lives of nearly one million people annually and is the number one killer of children. Malaria No More supports the purchase, distribution, and necessary education around the provision of bed nets to protect Tanzanian women and children at risk of malaria infection.

Activities

Malaria No More provides populations at risk of malaria with insecticide-treated bed nets, which protect people at night when the vast majority of infections occur, and have enabled several African countries to reduce malaria deaths by more than 50%.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Malaria No More's work will support a national campaign in Tanzania that aims to provide more than seven million insecticide-treated bed nets to vulnerable populations and achieve universal coverage of Tanzania's under-five population with bed nets.

Project Message

We have the knowledge, the tools, and increasingly the political will to stop millions of children dying needlessly.

Latest Update from the Field

Working together to make Malaria No More

By Scott Case - Vice Chair and CEO, August 13, 2008 05:06 PM

Malaria No More is thrilled to partner with Global Giving to fight malaria in Tanzania. Through the generosity of our donors, enough funds have been raised to distribute almost 1,000 bed nets to women and children at risk of malaria.

In Tanzania, around 93% of the mainland population is at risk of infection, and malaria is the leading cause of death for children under five years of age, accounting for 36% of all deaths. But it doesn't have to be this way. Insecticide-treated bed nets, which protect people from mosquitoes at night when risk of infection is highest, are proven and effective malaria prevention tools. Bed nets have helped several African countries slash malaria deaths and illness by more than 50%.

Malaria No More is using funds from Global Giving donors to help the country of Tanzania close in on the United Nations Secretary-General's call to achieve universal bed net coverage by 2010. The country aims to distribute over seven million nets and achieve universal coverage of the under-five population, one of the groups most at-risk for infection.

Bed nets are currently being procured and distribution is expected to begin in September 2008.
