More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Ixil are a highland Maya community in Guatemala who are still suffering the effects of the decades-long Guatemalan civil war. Families in the region are unable to purchase basic necessities, much less livestock. This forces young people to emigrate to urban centers in search of work. MADRE will aid 225 Ixil women participants in this sustainable agriculture, food security, and economic development project.

Activities

Services include: Provide pigs, corn, and supplies to 225 women; train 12 participants to lead future trainings; develop a marketing plan that includes local and urban markets; and create a revolving loan fund to support new participants.

Funding Information

Latest Update from the Field

A Letter from Muixil

By Vivian Stromberg - Executive Director, May 29, 2008 04:52 PM

"Thank you, MADRE, for your financial support. Congratulations, MADRE, for recognizing what we do. This project has a lot of meaning for us. MADRE helps to make our community strong. We are planning to increase the size of our project by buying more pigs, and we want to develop new projects. We want our daughters to see us as strong women so they can believe in their own strength. When we get rid of macho ideas, we can grow our beautiful earth and all our projects will make the families in our community have better lives. And our daughters will be able to live their dreams. Thank you, MADRE! Congratulations, MADRE!"
