Thank you for giving seed to prevent starvation in Darfur (our final update for this project)
Thank you - your donation is helping people survive! It is with huge gratitude that we can report that you have provided sorghum seed to plant for many families in Kids for Kids villages in Darfur who were facing starvation. We reached 70% of our fundraising target thanks to your generosity, and have helped as many families as we could. As subsistence farmers people eat what they grow - and because of the horrendous inflation they have less chance than ever of supplementing it with anything else. Many children have only known the taste of sorghum and assida, the local blancmange type meal made out of millet, the main crop. Thanks to you, we were able to provide seed and tools in time for planting, and although conditions have been difficult, the rains did come at last, and they will have crops to harvest. “I had good reports telling us that the families who received their seed for planting are expecting a better crop than they have had for the past 2 years” said our local programme manager.
This project proved we can really make a difference - let's do it again! The time for planting has passed, so this project is being closed down, but please look out for the next one in a few months’ time. Due to the risk of rodents and weevils we do not buy seed and store it, so we are not collecting for seed right now. However, it will be planting season again before we know it - so please do support us! The rains are due in June / July, so we will be in touch in April with a new project appealing for seeds and tools.
How else can you help? For those families who did not receive seeds for planting, this year is going to be very difficult, but there is more we can do. With your support Kids for Kids can provide goats to supplement their diet with nutritious milk. UNICEF said that children in every village in Darfur are malnourished, except in Kids for Kids villages, and the Goat Loan microfinance projects play a big role in this. The 2014 appeal for seed grain has now closed, but you can still be part of the miracle - please give what you can to Kids for Kids, and spread the word to encourage more people to support us. Thank you!
