There are hundreds of youth in Haiti who are not able to find a job because they do not have access to education. These students have the motivation and desire to work and to learn but often lack the means. University of the People has succeeded in cutting down almost the entire cost of higher education, charging only nominal processing fees. Your donation will help the students in Haiti who can not afford even these minimal fees get an education so they can find a job.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The 2010 earthquake destroyed much of Haiti's higher education sector and thus limited access to work. Twenty-eight of Haiti's 32 major universities were completely destroyed. Still today, the situation is bleak for many. The project meets a critical need by empowering Haitian students through higher education and providing the skills for these students to find employment and rebuild Haiti. Without this access to education, Haitian youth will have limited employment options.
How will this project solve this problem?
Cognizant of this critical need, and with an unwavering commitment to its mission, UoPeople, the world's tuition free, online university, committed to provide 250 local Haitian students with the opportunity to pursue higher education in Haiti - free, and increase their options for employment and financial stability. Students will study towards an Associate's Degree in either Business Administration or Computer Science. This degree will help Haitian youth find gainful employment upon graduation.
Potential Long Term Impact
Many of our existing students provide feedback on the life-changing experience of attaining the education they desperately needed. Many Haitian youth are now required to be the breadwinners for their families, but without education there is little hope to find a job and earn a living. Haitian students will be better able to find employment after obtaining a degree. First it's the improvement of an individual, then a better community, country, and ultimately, the world.
