This spring, Arts for All's Step Right Up program will begin at The Green School, a public high school in Brooklyn. We will write, produce & perform an original work of theater with the students of this school. For many, this is their only exposure to the arts. And for even more, this is their only opportunity to really let their creative voices be heard, to take ownership of a creative project, & to push themselves in new & exciting ways.
When we first brought this program to The Green School, there were no other after school arts programs. There wasn't even a prom for these students! Funding for the arts in the public school system is continually cut. We bring an opportunity for students to get involved in the many different art forms that a theater production provides- from writing to acting, choreography to music, costume and set design, and visual art. We have received partial funding from the NYC DCA for this program.
The students at the Green School are bright & creative, & when given a platform to channel this creativity, amazing things happen from silent film style cops & robbers shows to zombie apocalypse musicals to classic tales of star-crossed love. This program instills pride in our students as we guide them through the process of creating an original production from start to finish. The art scene grows in Bushwick around this school so let's bring it back inside the Green school's walls.
Arts For All provides our students with the opportunity to develop life skills such as teamwork, self-confidence, self-expression, creativity and personal resilience through the lens of a specific artistic discipline. It is our belief that arts education offers many opportunities for personal development and can also enhance students' academic careers. Many of our programs are aligned with the Common Core.
