This project will help to develop the reading habit of Cambodian children by encouraging and engaging them with reading new good storybooks. Our librarian has designed a specific curriculum with reading time, playing time and doing some activities such as asking them questions and reading a storybook. This is important to develop the culture of reading of our children, which is very important for them and their country.
Cambodia is one of a developing country which most of its people don't like reading books. The reasons behind because we used to face with a big tragedy of civil war, Khmer Rouge Regime which almost 90 percent of teachers and scholars were killed; libraries, documentaries were destroyed. As a result, the illiterate people were increased and the culture of reading has not considered as important. This has affected so much to our next generations.
We believe that promoting reading is the best solution by starting to educate our children to understand the important of reading. We have set up a library at our organization, so our children can come to read the books daily. We have a librarian who is responsible for making sure our children get the best benefits from their reading, which then can develop their good habit. By buying new storybooks, our children will engage more on reading and get new knowledge.
By promoting our children to read, they will then understand the important of reading and keep on their good habit. This is very important for themselves because reading bring them resources of knowledge which it is not only important for them, but also our society and the world.
