Life Skills for 25 Young Women in Fort Worth

By Randal Mays | President, JA of the Chisholm Trail

In October, 2012, Junior Achievement of the Chisholm Trail in Fort Worth, Texas used the $650 raised from the Give for Youth Microproject to implement one class of the JA Economics for Success program at Fort Worth’s Young Women’s Leadership Academy.  Twenty-three 8th grade students participated in this program which was delivered to these after they completed the regular school day. The final session of the program was delivered December 14.

Students at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy participated in six program lessons learning life skills that will empower them to own their economic future.  Students were exposed to new and exciting careers, developed skills that will help them obtain a career and to be successful in the workplace, and gained knowledge to manage their personal finances.  For some of these students, the skills learned through the JA program could be the difference in them becoming the first in their families to graduate high school and continue their education at the college level.

I a recent survey of Junior Achievement alumni, 88 percent credited JA for helping them prepare for the world of work, 67 percent credited JA with helping them understand the importance of staying in school, and 63 percent were completely confident in their ability to manage their personal finances compared to only 37 percent who had no JA.  Also, 91 percent of teachers agree or strongly agree that JA program connect what is learned in the classroom to the
outside world.

Thank you to the individuals who supported our Microproject to provide life skills for young women in Fort Worth.
