Money for this project will fund buying surfboards and paying for lessons for our girls. Here at Mariposa DR Foundation we are trying to show Dominican and Haitian girls that they too can succeed at surfing if given the chance and the right board!
One in ten of the people living in extreme poverty is an adolescent girl. When a girl hits adolescence, a small window opens and it can slam shut fast and forever if she drops out of school, becomes pregnant or is exposed to HIV. In a community where few girls finish 8 grade, let alone graduate from high school, this project will help the Mariposa DR Foundation continue its aim to empower girls through education and sports.
The Mariposa DR Foundation has created various programs to incorporate experiential learning and build self esteem. We believe surfing is an incredible way for our Mariposas to achieve both of these goals as it allows them to focus their energies in a healthy way. Through our surfing program, Mariposa's girls will see that they too can can access the world of surfing!
Investing in the education, health and empowerment of a girl today means that she will have the tools to make smart choices that will better the lives of her children in the future. This program will get 20 girls from adolescence to adulthood safely.
