21 year old Elard wants to be a teacher, but jobs are difficult to come by in Port au Prince and he's not been able to find work yet. This has left him struggling to support himself. But Elard isn't taking matters lying down. He's joined the English in Mind Institute (EIM) so that he can learn English, find a job to support himself, and help his community. Elard loves EIM, saying "The school helps me to be an agent [of change] in my country."
More than two thirds of Haitian adults lack formal employment and more than 50% of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day. Despite high unemployment, there is actually a shortage of skilled labour in Port au Prince. English speakers can find work in hotels, restaurants, and offices, yet there are virtually no free English schools. Most Haitians, including Elard, cannot afford to attend these schools. Without the means to develop their skills, many are left trapped in poverty.
By ensuring that Elard can continue studying English for free at the English in Mind Institute, you can help him develop the skills he needs to fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher and helping as many children as he can. Elard already uses his skills to help local kids in orphanages with free English classes.
Your donations will give Elard the means to support himself and his family into the future. This will let him escape poverty for good.
