South Florida's BizCamp Experience

NFTE South Florida’s summer BizCamp concluded earlier this summer, taking place in part thanks to the donations we received through GlobalGiving. Your contributions totaled over $3,000, funds which helped 25 young entrepreneurs develop the skills necessary to compete in the modern workforce. Our two-week, intensive business program allowed students to take classes in entrepreneurship and create their own businesses. Each student team then had to come up with a fully detailed plan for how to grow and market their business, putting the lessons learned during the BizCamp into action right away. Thanks to your donations on GlobalGiving, as well our partners at the Citi Foundation, our camp in Broward County in South Florida was a great success.

The BizCamp experience is focused on two overlapping goals: to get students thinking in an entrepreneurial mindset, that unique set of attitudes, skills, and behaviors that entrepreneurs demonstrate every day, and to drive students towards business creation as a medium for financial literacy. As our students take lessons on entrepreneurship they are also forming teams to create their business plans. Each of these student ventures is entered in a business plan competition at the end of the two-week course, with the winner receiving seed capital to help their startup idea come to life.  The course progresses along with the formation of these business plans.  NFTE’s young entrepreneurs use this project to learn self-direction, risk-taking, flexibility and adaptability, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, all of which are at the core of the mindset.

In South Florida’s BizCamp, the competition showcase was incredibly close. It ended with the team of Sarah N., Sasha R., and Karen V. winning for their business N.R. Vation.  Their venture was centered on the idea of manufacturing hairbrushes customized to work with different hairstyles, to be ordered online. In addition to the $1,500 N.R. Vation won to help start their business they also won the chance to advance to the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View California, where they could compete for even more venture capital and prizes. Their new business would not have been possible without your donations through Global Giving. Thank again for helping our students unlock their entrepreneurial mindset!
