This project will support a program that uses the sport of fishing as a mechanism to immerse and educate children about marine science and the need for enhanced marine conservation. The program will be taught at a local public school on the island of Abaco. The Bahamas has some of the most beautiful marine resources; however, new threats of invasive species, irresponsible fishing, and ocean pollution are quickly destroying these pristine habitats. Education of the future young leaders is needed.
The problem of environmental degradation exists in our world and is getting worse, especially in developing countries where many marine resources are exploited due to a lack of knowledge. Thus, this project will be addressing the problem in Abaco, Bahamas by instructing a group of children on how to be ethical anglers and good stewards of the sea to ensure fish populations for the future. The lessons learned will create youth marine stewards who will then influence their peers and family.
This program has been conducted around the United States and in Nassau, Bahamas previously. The children are taught through hands-on classes about the basics of fishing and how to fish in a responsible manner by following regulations and using certain techniques to preserve fish populations. A curriculum designed by Duke marine science professors is used to educate the youth about the current problems facing their native habitats. While the children are taken on field trips to reinforce lessons.
We will educate around 30 children to be ethical anglers and good stewards of the sea, which will create a positive feedback loop that will impact many more in the local community. The children will be able to go forth after the program and educate their peers on how to fish in a responsible manner. In addition, we will conduct a beach clean up activity that will educate the children about the need to dispose of trash properly. As has been seen in other areas, the program has large potential.
