Meet Joseph "Hindo" Hindogbae, a young educator fom Bumpe, a village in Sierra Leone. Hindo is passionate about bringing environmental education to his community, and with your help he would like to start an environmental ed program to raise awareness about, and take action on issues like environmental degradation and waste management. Hindo has an action plan ready to go, and a team of teachers and students at his school that have committed to taking this journey with him.
In rural Sierra Leone, there is a lack of education on proper waste management, which causes situations that breed mosquitoes and vulnerability to outbreaks of deadly diseases like malaria and cholera. Four months ago, there was an outbreak of cholera in the country that killed hundreds of people. Despite the urgency of raising awareness about these issues, many teachers do not have the training, tools and resources needed to help their students take action.
This first stage of this project is a workshop on how to bring environmental ed into the classroom. With the support of the GlobalGiving community, Hindo received a scholarship to take online professional development delivered by TIGed in environmental ed, so he is well-positioned to lead this workshop. Bumpe teachers will then use the environmental education tools and resources acquired to equip students and community members to start projects, including one to improve waste management.
Hindo hopes that this project will empower students to reach out to their peers about environmental issues across Sierra Leone and that the rate of cholera and malaria outbreaks could be decreased.
