Limpopo is known to be one of the poorest, least educated areas of South Africa. In schools, there are often more than 50 students per class. Only 48% of school leavers pass their Matriculation exam (graduate). Unemployment and poverty play a huge role in the destruction of the environment, with locals looking to poaching to support their families. The animals habitat is constituently under threat from humans and encounters leave the innocent animals in a far from harmonious state of living.
DAKTARI educates local, underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. If this project is funded, it will not only cover the cost for 15 children to attend 5 days of environmental education during March, BUT also enable us to provide the orphaned animals of DAKTARI with the proper loving food and care that they so desperately crave.
After spending a week of environmental education at DAKTARI, the children become aware of the importance of their environment. They now are role models and encourage their communities to protect nature. Our program has also stimulated passions within many children who are now working in ecotourism. The orphaned animals are given a second chance in life for without DAKTARI many would be shot. Countless animals will live out their lives in peace + harmony and act as Ambassadors for their species.
