What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in up to 5% of all school age youth often resulting in significant emotional & social consequences, including communication withdrawal, bullying, & shame. A survey by the National Stuttering Assoc. revealed that 80% of youth who stutter (YWS) reported being bullied & 40% of adults had been denied a job or promotion. YWS can become great communicators who exhibit communicative confidence & competence when provided with adequate therapy services.
How will this project solve this problem?
Camp Shout Out provides high quality, hands-on training to speech-language pathologists and graduate students to improve their skills and confidence when working with young people who stutter. This training occurs throughout the session of Camp Shout Out and consists of lecture, observation, problem solving and hands-on therapy while being guided by well known experts in the field of fluency disorders. This project will provide the funding needed to bring in faculty members and trainers
