Fikelela Aids Project & partner Think Twice held their Jerry Giraffe Sunday School Training Workshop on Saturday 22nd February 2014 – The programme focus on Child Abuse Awareness. The ten fun filled lessons teach our children that they are Special, and how they should treat others with Kindness, Teaching them body pride and what to do when faced with potential abuse. Another strong focus is on issues of HIV/Aids. Basic facts on HIV/Aids ,how it is transmitted and how to keep him/herself safe from infections. This section aims to challenge the Stigma we face around HIV/Aids and build a generation who is able to accept those around them who are infected and affected by the Aids pandemic. The programme builds important foundations for our children’s self esteem, helping them to make Good Choices. Teachers that attended the workshop were from seven different churches. Each of the Life skill Lessons is combined with a Bible story. Teachers also received a resource pack with visuals to which children relate very well. Much Loved Jerry – is the Persona doll that visits throughout the ten lessons and the children look forward to seeing him every week in Sunday school.
A time of giving, a time of love, a time of joy. For most Christmas is a wonderful time of year and for the Fikelela Family it was no different. The sounds of giggling children, the looks of absolute excitement as they unwrapped gifts, the pitter patter of little feet running around as they play with their new toys. The children at Fikelela discovered that Christmas is a time for celebrating and giving, but more than that, they learnt that they were loved by more than just the mammas in the home, but that Jesus loves them and made them special. This Christmas, for many the first, they learnt that they are not forgotten, but loved and valued.
As the new year rolled in we have seen many of our children grow and we are seeing our children develop in leaps and bounds. Babies becoming walking toddlers and this year we were excited to start the year by sending 14 children to school and 10 to preschool. 24 bags packed, Lunch boxes lined up on the counter, 100s of books covered, uniforms ironed, 48shoes polished - day one was a big success. The children loved their new schools, and we have already seen them grow and learn! We are excited and expectant for lives to be transformed in 2014.
Fikelela designed a child abuse programme in partnership with Think Twice. This is a fun interactive way to learn about difficult issues.
The main character is Jerry the Giraffe who comes and tells the children stories. They learn about emotions, some feelings are 'star' feelings and some are 'stone' feelings
they also learn about good secrets and bad secrets. A good secret is like when it is Daddys birhtday and we mustnt tell him what we bought for his present. A good secret will be told one day and it will make people very happy.
a bad secret is something that must never be told and will make people cross or sad if they find out. Like Uncle John telling you to come into his house and he will give you sweets, but dont tell Mummy.
Thankyou Jerry for telling our children important things that can keep them safe!
