Update Solar Tuki - May 13

Milan showing his house in Warangi VDC.

I feel privileged to post this updates directly through the experience from my fresh field visit of eastern hilly region of Nepal. My current field visit included a visit in a school (Shree Laxmi Secondary School) located at Warangi VDC of Morang District. It took me 8 hrs of continuous walk from the nearby road accessible area to reach in the school. Due to the harsh hilly terrains, this place is yet to be electrified. The people in the village till this day are relying in the traditional kerosene lamp for the lights during evening hours to pursue their daily activities.

During my visit to this school, I interacted with teachers, students and parents about the options they have for light during evening hours. Few of them answered – Solar Home System, but, most of the peoples answers were same – “Kerosene Lamp”. Among the people who are using kerosene lamp, one of the student “Milan” (15 yrs of age and studying at grade 10) took me to his house and showed his kerosene lamp as a form of only lighting source, which he uses during his regular study hours in evening and night time during his exams. He shared about the struggle and sufferings that he is into while using kerosene lamp for studying late evenings. Due to poor economic condition of his family, they couldn’t afford bigger solar home system as a source for clean lighting in their house.

37 students like Milan in grade 10 and a total of 335 students in Shree Laxmi Secondary School have the same story. Hence, we have decided to install a community charging center in the school and facilitate the students with a piece of solar tuki to take them in their home in the evening hours, so that the sufferings of those students studying under the light of Kerosene lamp could be minimized. It will improve their educational condition and health as they will have access to clean form of lighting source and healthy environment to breathe in.

We would like to thank you for all your support and believing and supporting us in our campaign. Because of You, we have been able to bring changes in the life of students in rural Nepal towards their better lives and education. Furthermore, we would like to request you all to share the information of our project and request your friends and families to donate on 12th June 13 (Wednesday). Project Update- Mirge School Env, Feb 2013

Empowering students through providing training on different topics / issues and motivating them to organize different programs in their school and community so as to encourage and enhance their leadership skills and capabilities is one of the major objective in School Environment Improvement program. Hence, different activities and training programs were organized in past for the students so as to empower and motivate them. As a result, Nature Club members presented their activeness through organizing different programs in their school and peripheral community of their school.

Every month, students are organizing different programs and activities so as to enhance the knowledge and skills of students in their schools. On 14th Dec 2012 Friday, Nature Club members of Kalidhunga H.S.S. organized a Quiz Competition in their school. A Volleyball Competition was organized on 4th January 2013, Friday. Similarly, at the end of every month, students are very active in organizing clean-up campaign in their school periphery and community. A speech competition was organized among the students on 21st February 2013. Organizing these types of programs in school definitely enhance knowledge and skills. It also helps in improving school environment through creating harmony and friendly behavior in between and among the students.

A parents gathering and Anniversary Celebration was also celebrated in 22nd and 23rd February 2013. Organizing these types of programs in schools motivated all the stakeholders – Parents, Students and teachers to work in close coordination for improving school environment as well as to take the school in a new height in the community. It helped all the stakeholders to think about the challenges that are required to think and act.

As educational fiscal year is nearly to an end, development of new plans and programs are under consideration. Hope new educational fiscal year will bring more energy to the nature club members and motivation for them to organize more innovative programs.

We would like to thank you all for your continuous support and encouragement in the work that we are doing towards improving the school condition in Nepal. We would also like to request you to disseminate the information of our program in your network so as to raise more support for our cause and bring difference in the life of students in rural areas. We also hope to get your feedback, comments and suggestions regarding our program in our email ecca@mos.com.np so that we could implement our program more effectively.
