680 Nets Distributed During Rainy Season

As malaria continues to be a rampant disease throughout Mali and other African countries, the Alliance continues to provide mosquito nets for 24 villages. Through our distribution of nets and training on their proper use and care, villages have seen a decrease in the number of malaria cases.

This year we have distributed 680 mosquito nets to date. We continue to teach that the simple act of sleeping under a mosquito net each night can mean the difference between life and death--especially for children ages five and under.

Thank you for your support of this important and life-saving program!

Sincerely,
Jen Beckstead

School in Session October 1st!

Girls look forward to an education in Mali
Girls look forward to an education in Mali

Dear project sponsors,

There is one week in counting until school starts in 11 rural villages in the Ouelessebougou region. Each of the 11 villages where we have education programs didn't even have a school, a teacher, or a student until the Ouelessebougou Alliance began its education program in 2004. In fact it was not long ago when girls didn't even get the chance to go to school. We are excited to continue our support of education councils as they work hard to improve the education programs in their villages. We are excited to continue our support of 800 children by providing them with books, chalkboards, and other supplies--giving them a good learning experience. And, we are excited to support teachers by providing them with new curriculum books--giving them the ability to improve their teaching skills.

We have seen much progress since we began our educational programs nearly 10 years ago. Over the past five years villages have taken ownership and accountability for the payment of teachers' salaries and for the maintenance of schools. It is now expected that girls--just as boys--attend school. What progress! And, this year will be no different...an important step in the lives of 800 boys and girls.

Thank you for your support!

900+ Nets to be Distributed!

A bed net protects a mother and baby from malaria
A bed net protects a mother and baby from malaria

Dear project sponsor,

The great news for the area of Ouelessebougou is that the rains have come and it looks like a drought will be less than likely this year! The bad news--here come the mosquitos. This year we plan to distribute more than 900 mosquito nets for families throughout rural Ouelessebougou, Mali. The simple act of sleeping under a mosquito net each night can mean the difference between life and death--especially for children ages five and under. Because malaria is Africa's # 1 life threatening disease, we hope to triple our impact of mosquito net distribution in the near future.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Staff and Villagers
