Chikumbuso means "Remembrance" our mission statement is to remember those who died (both family and friends), to remember where we came from (a place of poverty and hunger) and to remember to do for others (give back to the community).
The Chikumbuso community is a grassroots project in Ng'ombe, Zambia that provides alternatives to the most vulnerable women and children especially those reeling from the AIDS epidemic in the township. The organization provides free schooling for 450 orphans, microenterprise training and income generation activities for the widows, health care for community members, financial and English literacy classes and job training for at-risk youth, home-based care and support to grandmothers and community building programs. The crocheted bags created by the widows are life changing to the Chikumbuso community and every effort is made to use up-cycled plastic. They are the foundation of our income generation and support all our programming.
