This project will produce and distribute 300 Comfort Kits to women incarcerated in Zambian prisons as well as vulnerable girls. A kit consists of a plastic lined pouch with 5 reusable/washable sanitary pads, soap, a bucket and underwear.
Women in Zambian prisons face a slew of problems. Overcrowding, brutal beatings, rape and a complete lack of sanitation are just a part of life. When food is hardly available - you can be sure no one has disposable pads. Women prisoners are in need of a quality washable product that they can keep for reuse for up to 12 months.
Girls are also vulnerable when it comes time for their monthly periods. This often keeps them out of school for a week every month.
Our team will go to the prisons with local prison visitation groups to distribute the Kits.
We will also try to help vulnerable girls who can not afford to buy sanitary pads.
Firstly, women who have found themselves sitting on the ground with rags wrapped around them deal with their monthly period will have freedom of movement and a way to deal with this most basic issue on a continuing basis. Women who have been treated shamefully in prisons under terrible conditions will have hope that after their time is over they still have some value because others have cared for them.
Young girls will stay in school and have the same opportunities that boys have to succeed.
