Maximizing the Wet Season for Transplanting

By Shen R. Maglinte | Project Leader

With all efforts spent on covering a hectare for transplanting, the community is now readying the seedlings for the next expansion.  The Philippines is now entering the rainy season which is the best time for planting.  Under this condition, the community is hoping to have more surviving transplanted seedlings.   In the 2nd quarter where summer is ending, there were seedlings that withered during the long dry spell.  There were others that were stunted owing to the lack of water and high temperature of the soil.   Nevertheless a good number of transplanted seedlings are struggling to survive.

Some of these seedlings were revitalized at the onset of the rains which came late June and early July.  One of the problems threatening the sustainance of the seedlings is strong rains though much needed when excessive brings about likewise run off soil.  Though it will not result into massive flooding some volatile and fragile seedlings get carried away.

It was good also that forest fires did not occur in the rehabilitation area which is very common during intense dry season.  Otherwise, the cogon grasses that abounds in the area if burned will sweep whatever vegetation there is in its pathway.  Most vulnerable would be the slowly growing seedlings that has just been painstakingly planted by the community.

Hence during this rainy period the community is now readying their previously prepared seedling pots.  The recovery and collection of naturally grown species still continue.  Most community members are inspired by the positive results of their efforts.  Their goal is to take a step by step approach.  The forest area to be rehabilitated is still enormous.  But they are hoping that with these little but sustained efforts in a year or two, the tree seedlings will be sturdy enough to form a forest patch, where birds eating the seedlings and passing it out in nearby unvegetated area may start sprouting and add on to potential trees growing.

We thank you always for being part of this endeavor.  Till our next report on the progress of their work.  Thank you very much.
