Summary
The Women's Employment Network (WEN) was founded over 25 years ago to assist women in raising their self-esteem and achieving economic independence through sustained employment.
WEN takes a long-view of our clients' lives and futures. We abide by the adage of "teaching a woman to fish, instead of giving a woman one fish." What we do is bigger than just helping women find jobs. We help women find careers and a path to a future that includes self-sufficiency and stability.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Failure of women to find work reduces the community's ability to maintain economic balance. The jobless rate for women is the worst it has been in 33 years. Single mothers and women with families are most affected. WEN's service area is the bi-state 15-county Kansas City metro area. We provide services to women, age 18 - 62 with a high school diploma or equivalent, who need help overcoming barriers to finding sustainable employment to support themselves and their families economically.
How will this project solve this problem?
WEN's staff works individually with women to identify barriers to employment and to provide the services needed to eliminate or overcome those barriers, thus empowering women to achieve economic self-sufficiency in today's workplace environment.
Potential Long Term Impact
WEN's program serves over 1,000 women per year, empowering them to find sustainable employment with wages and benefits enough to provide for themselves and their families, stopping the cycle of poverty and giving hope for the future.
Project Message
I firmly believe WEN saved me and showed me how to build a better future for me and my family.
That's what WEN is all about helping women to make a better world for themselves and their families."
- Wanda Coleman, WEN graduate
