Dear friends and sponsors of Wikimapa:
Our work at Complexo da Penha community is almost ending. The official closure is set to next month. The wikireporters team is still registering POIs and until now more than 300 Points of Interest as hospitals, schools, stores, squares, public sports courts, cultural activities spots and other NGOs are already featured on wikimapa.
Wikireporter Lincoln Cerqueira, aged 16 says that wikimapa is already known by the community residents and highlights that they are the ones who ask to have their stores added on wikimapa: “I have plenty of friends that owns shops and stores here at Penha Community that always ask me when will I be able to go in their shops to get all needed information and tag them on Wikimapa”.
Another great news and this one is related to wikimapa system is that we´ve reached 5,000 registered Points of Interest!
As part of our expansion plan soon Wikimapa project will be executed on six new low-income communities from Rio and São Paulo being them Rocinha, Mangueira, São João de Merit, Capao Redondo (São Paulo) besides second stage mapping activities at Cidade de Deus (City of God) and Maré, already benefited on pilot stage. Soon Rede Jovem and Wikimapa team will bring a lot of fresh and big news! Stay tuned!
We have news about the project Wikimapa. The seven young residents are already in the streets of Complexo da Penha slum showing what their community has to offer. Already on the map are several schools, markets, restaurants and leisure spots. For them is a great experience to know and disclose where they live. In the words of the wiki reporter Maíra:"I'm adoring this project since I started to map. Knew things, people, culture points, new emporuim in my community that I did not know and had no idea that existed. I had no idea that being a wiki reporter would do so well for me and my Community, I am very excited. "Still has much to be discovered and shown in Complexo da Penha slum and our wiki reporters are looking. That's it, folks! We'll come back soon with more Wikimapa news straight from Complex da Penha.
As a part of Wikimapa’s expansion stage, we’re going to Complexo da Penha slum. Seven new wiki reporters were selected and they’re about to start mapping the community hopefully next month. They were selected after a meeting where we could learn more about they. After that they had a three-day training, where they were introduced to the Wikimapa website and mobile app, learned how to map and had video and photograph classes with the mobile phone. One of the new wiki reporters, Allan (20), is very excited about the project and can’t wait to start mapping. He said "we’re going to do what’s possible to improve our community".Check out the pictures below. We also would like to say that Wikimapa is about to start a brand new website and mobile app with new design and new functionalities! Mapping will be easier and funnier! That's all for now folks! We'll be back soon with news about the begining of the mapping at Complexo da Penha.
Dear friends and sponsors of Wikimapa project,
First Wikimapa team would like to reinforce our best wishes for this new year and share our hopes for a great year of joy, solidarity, partnership and social change.
It´s a great honor to be part of Global Giving system and for Wikimapa it´s very important to see our evolution and achieved results shared with all of you!
Since our last report, sent on November of 2011, a lot of points of interest we´re mapped within Complexo do Alemao slum, our focus area for this first expansion stage. Our big wiki-reporter team, formed by 16 young boys and girls residents from the slum is being responsible to map vocations, identify resources and spread information regarding their slum for the whole world, by tagging new places, mapping unmapped streets and making wikimapa system well known and used by local people! Little by little Rede Jovem coordination team is seeing a dream coming true, with the help of local youth!
Now, We´d like to share few words about the team and a little about some stories shared by them on a daily blog (that you can follow at http://blog.wikimapa.org.br/ with some testimonials and great content about local people and events, only in Portuguese).
Luanna Souza, 20 years, wiki-reporter, resident of Complexo do Alemão, on December 20th posted nice pics and told to all wikimapa followers about a very nice and new local event that gathers artists and residents to a jam session, soiree or just a party with poetry, photography, workshops, music, dance and even a local fair based upon solidarity economy concept, with nice and innovative products as a great alternative for Christmas presents! See more on http://blog.wikimapa.org.br/?author=15.
To wrap up this post/report and keep it short We´d only like to share a very impacting testimonial sent today by Camila Santos, 26 years, wiki-reporter, resident of Complexo do Alemao slum since her birth, explaining in her words what is a wiki-reporter and how this experience impacts her life:
“You have taught me a new way of understanding and seeing my community; First wikimapa bug/seed bite me, poisoned me and so I started to feel responsible for contaminating more and more people. The idea of using mobile technology to identify positive aspects or the best of what we have in our community make us grow and move forward together (us and the community). This because after mapping interesting points we stimulate the access and use of the system and obviously everyone wants to check the results available on the website. But being a wiki-reporter is first of all to be a leader for after being trained we have to develop abilities and improve our way of dealing with challenges and also a little bit malicious as we´re dealing with people. For me this is a unique experience and this is the only project that we have to identify and cast good things within one of the slums already considered as most dangerous in Rio de Janeiro”.
Help us keep Wikimapa alive and improve our technology by enabling the creation of new versions of Wikimapa technology to other Operating Systems - such as Android and IOS -. Be yourself a wiki-reporter by using your knowledge to enlarge our references on the map and help us improve our technology and methodology by donating any amount to our project. Check out our donations options to see which best fits your possibilities! You can be part of this process and help us promote social change through mobile technology and local knowledge!

We promoted a very big event on two very nice places at Complexo do Alemao being the firts the local movie theatre, with all the press from Brazil and Rio to watch and record streams to spread the word about Wikimapa project, our new wiki-reporters team and the scope of this new stage of the project. Later all the team promoted a huge party on a local court that counted with a lot of artistic presentations counting on the luxurios presence of many important local partners as the samba school and band from Complexo do Alemão and a group of street dancers from Afrorregae NGO. Watch out some nice pics bellow!Since the launching Wikimapa achieved a lot of important new results and we´d like to share some, so that everyone can monitor our latest developments and project´s evolution. - 30 new streets never before registered on online mapping services were created on Wikimapa since August! - 375 new collaborators since the launch event and a total of 1,500 wikimapa users/collaborators! - 1,630 new Points of Interest inserted on the map since the launch event. Over 3,900 POIs mapped wiht Wikimapa project, specially on low-income areas! - over 250 downloads of wikimapa app for Symbian since August, with an expressive total of over 1,300 downloads of our app! It's been a huge pleasure to work with this big new team of wiki-reporters, composed by 16 local young boys and girls that daily acts mapping the whole community and promoting community development by multiplying information and knowledge related to Wikimpa project, mapping technologies and local apretiation! It's possible that Rede Jovem Program team seal a new deal with our current sponsors (VIVO operator and Fundação Telefonica) to enable the expansion still on 2011 to other communities next to Complexo do Alemao! And we´re currently planning a huge replication process programmed for next year, when we'll see Wikimapa on huge low-income communities and well known favelas by its local culture legacy such as Mangueira and Rocinha, the biggest slum from Brazil and Latin America.Help us keep Wikimapa alive and improve our technology by enabling the creation of new versions of Wikimapa technology to other Operating Systems - such as Android and IOS - to enable the mobile app availibility to other cell phone models and by that transforming anyone with a smartphone and the will to set new locations and create new local references on this new logics of producing maps on a wiki-reporter. Be yourself a wiki-reporter by using your knowledge to enlarge our references on the map and help us improve our technology and methodology by donating any ammount to our project. Check out our donations options to see which best fits your possibilities! Anyone can make a difference!
