A new school school year is upon us!

We are coming to the end of the school year for our girls at Agbogugu girls secondary school. And on a recent visit they welcomed us with smiles and laughter. They are all working hard and so grateful for the support of the GlobalGiving community.

As we continue to help fund the educations of these 20 girls, some of them ready to graduate, we are reminded that only 4% of Nigerian girls in the secondary school age group are enrolled in secondary school due to poverty. Studies have found that more girls than boys drop out, repeat grades, or do not finish the primary cycle. So, there is still work to be done and many more girls who need our support.

We have already done so much but we can do better. Did you know that a 0.3 percent boost in economic growth results from a one-percent increase in the number of girls finishing secondary school? Keeping girls educated and getting just even basic education can have such a huge impact! We are making a difference. Lets not stop here. Help us continue to grow the scholarship fund and increase the number of girls we sponsor for the coming year.

You support has made for some very happy girls. Check out those smiles!

Meet the girls!

We thought you might like to see some shots from the field! Here are our beneficiaries ready to arm themselves for the future! Unfortunately, our April trip to Nigeria has to be postponed due to lack of funding. The good news is, these girls have scholarships due to your support. This is a huge success! Remember this project is ongoing, as it continues we hope to be able to keep supporting more and more girls to go to and complete secondary school. So, your support is vital as we progress and develop new initiatives. Go to our website to see the rest of the photos and learn more about each girl http://www.knowledgeisaweapon.org

We LOVE to receive donations through the site too! Thank you so much for your continued support.

2010

W.E.A.P.O.N. is off to a great start in the new year. We have raised enough money to send seventeen (and counting) girls to secondary school for one year. We have been at work on the ground in Agbugugu in the village of Umuoye finding the girls most in need of school fees paid. Because of Global Giving we are able to give scholarships at the start of this current new school year starting in January. Soon we will have more footage of them in action! W.E.A.P.O.N is planning a trip to Nigeria in April 2010. During our visit we will connect with beneficiaries, create videos documenting their progress and after doing some needs research we hope to start a new project in a different area of the country the will be arts based. This work is not only inspiring for the girls who will get an education but for the members of the community that are getting involved in supporting the women and girls of their country. We hope to bring more on board in the future, as of now we have been able to employ a handful of Nigerian local leaders who are committed to working with W.E.A.P.O.N in creating small but effective projects throughout the country that will have a lasting effect. Thank you so much to those who supported us during the Global Open Challenge last fall. We could not have done it without you and the Global Giving community. Would love to get you feedback and ideas on how we can do more and be better at what we are trying to do.
