Summary

Many children in Makoko, one of Lagos State's largest informal settlements, lack access to books, libraries, and safe learning spaces. With book donations already secured by corporate donors, the VTS Mobile Library Project of Voice to the Street provides literacy support, storytelling, creative learning activities, and reading clubs for underserved children ages 6-12. The project currently supports 60 children weekly and aims to reach over 20,000 children across 10 communities by 2028.

Challenge

In Makoko and other underserved Lagos communities, many children attend overcrowded schools with limited learning materials, while others struggle with reading and communication skills despite being enrolled in school. With very few libraries in community schools, most children rarely interact with books outside classrooms. These literacy gaps reduce confidence, weaken academic performance, increases drop-out rates and limit long-term educational opportunities for vulnerable children.

Solution

The VTS Mobile Library Project provides books, literacy support, storytelling sessions, reading circles, and interactive learning activities directly within underserved communities. Children participate in weekly volunteer-led sessions focused on reading improvement, communication confidence, and educational engagement. The project also establishes community book clubs and sustainable reading spaces while engaging parents, teachers, and local volunteers to support long-term literacy development.

Long-Term Impact

The project aims to improve literacy, reading confidence, and educational participation among underserved children across Lagos communities. By 2028, VTS plans to expand the project into over 10 communities, reaching over 20,000 children through reading hubs, book clubs, and mobile literacy systems. The project will help strengthen reading culture, improve educational outcomes, and increase access to books and learning opportunities for vulnerable children.
