UCCANF aims to procure and transport information technology as well as provide training on its use for Cuba’s Civil Society activists. With a particular focus on the Youth in Cuba, this project will empower young activists to demand Human Rights, disseminate their message across the globe through modern channels, and keep record of the continued violations on the Island. In supporting UCCANF, those in Cuba struggling for Human Rights will have their voice heard and protected.
The current regime in Cuba maintains strict control of information and technology on the Island. Furthermore, access to the internet is extremely high for Citizens – ONE HOUR of internet access can cost anywhere between a week’s to a month’s salary. Activists are put in a situation where they must choose between using the internet to communicate their message and putting food on the table for their family.
This project addresses the technological deficiencies of Cuba’s Civil Society through the procurement and transportation of communication equipment to the Island as well as remittances for related service charges (ie internet or phone). With these provisions, Human Rights activists and Civil Society members will be able to communicate with each other more effectively, reach a larger audience off the Island, and keep detailed reports of the Cuban regime’s continued repression of its citizens.
The long term impact will be to facilitate Cuban Civil Society’s visibility and presence in the International Community. The regime’s strict control of information and movement on the Island severely restricts Civil Society from getting involved in relevant global affairs, like-minded international organizations, or other similar channels of Civic participation. This project enables their participation by leveraging modern technology and a growing network of supporters on, and off, the Island.
