In Northern Thailand, The Freedom Story identifies children who are at risk of being trafficked or exploited and protects them by directly combating the factors that put children at risk. Through scholarships, tutoring, mentorship, awareness raising, and life skills training, our programs help vulnerable children stay in school, protected, and on the path to truly thrive. With partners like churches, children's homes and similar organizations, we also work to spread prevention across the region.
An estimated 60,000 children in Thailand are exploited yearly in the sex industry, and in just one year, an estimated 9%, or 400,000 youths, were victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse. Root causes include poverty, lack of education, a family history of becoming victims of trafficking, and other factors like statelessness that make it difficult for people to earn income or participate in society. Children become vulnerable when the sex trade seems the only way to support their families.
With your support, we can keep these children safe. Our holistic approach prevents trafficking through education, human rights, and sustainable livelihoods. Since 2008, we've provided more than 1,000 scholarships to keep kids in school, with an 90% graduation rate. We've equipped more than 48,000 people to recognize trafficking threats and exercise their rights, and we've helped more than 3,800 caregivers build skills to alleviate poverty, support their children, and deter traffickers.
When we invest in vulnerable children, their families, and their communities, we build stable support systems that span generations and stop child trafficking before harm occurs. Children gain access to education, safety, and opportunity. Families gain the support they need to build stability, strengthen relationships, and protect their kids. Neighbors learn to respond to risks early, spread awareness, and create safe zones where traffickers can no longer prey on children.
