Summary
The Fishing Sheds Project provides storage and work sheds to Minamisanriku fishing families that lost their homes in the March 2011 Japan tsunami. Fishing sheds are the "base of operations" for fishing families. Sheds provide space to process seafood and to prepare and store equipment. Few families can afford to rebuild their crucial sheds after losing everything in the tsunami. Join PWA to build fishing sheds to restore the livelihoods of fishing families in northeast Japan.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The 2011 Japan tsunami devastated the Minamisanriku fishing industry, the town's economic engine. Numerous families lost homes, sheds, boats, and equipment. While fishing families are returning to their trade, few have been able to rebuild the sheds that are vital to their fishing operations. Many fishing families live in small temporary housing units, and need work and storage space.
How will this project solve this problem?
This Project builds storage and work sheds for Minamisanriku fishing families that lost their homes. Sheds are the "base of operations", where men, women, and children process fish and seaweed, repair equipment, and store supplies. Work and storage sheds are pivotal to fishing families returning to work.
Potential Long Term Impact
The sheds help rebuild critical infrastructure, restore livelihoods, and revitalize the fishing industry in northeast Japan. By targeting Minamisanriku's most vital industry, this project will accelerate economic recovery.
Project Message
Fishing sheds are essential to fishermen. The families that can afford to rebuild their sheds already have. The families that have not built sheds need your help.
