This project provides food, water, basic supplies and financing for home and micro-business rebuilding for families affected by the recent tsunami.
Many Samoan families were devastated by the recent tsunami. At least 20 villages were completely destroyed with 10,000 people affected. At least 2,000 people are now homeless. Ruta Sao, an SPBD client, lost four children under age 5 and is now living on a mountainside under a tarp. For women like Ruta, SPBD is providing food, water and basic supplies and will begin focusing on long-term solutions to help rebuild the local economy.
For emergency relief, SPBD’s local staff is providing a 20 pound sack of rice, 24 cans of fish, a large bushknife, a bucket for washing, cooking and bathing, plates, cups, spoons, 24 liters of water, mosquito coils, matches, soap, and ST$150 (US$50).
In addition to meeting urgent basic needs for hundreds of Samoan families, we will also help rebuild hundreds of micro-enterprise businesses and homes so families will be able to work their way out of poverty.
