This project provides 50 wheelchair tennis athletes with an avenue to keep their bodies and minds active and in shape.Tennis improves sports skills and allows disabled individuals to experience competition with the thrill of victory as well as the agony of defeat. Such experiences help individuals to face the adversity of a disability and focus on possibility rather than limitation and build positive perceptions of disabled individuals as high achieving men and women and positive role models.
The number of opportunities for wheelchair tennis players to compete in tournament play is limited. Our tournament is one of only 13 International Tennis Federation events across the United States. Tournament opportunities help individuals with disabilities survive and thrive by connecting to other human beings and to sources of energy and excitement within themselves.
The combination of social interaction, competition, and fitness fostered by the annual SCWTA tournament will enable wheelchair tennis players to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the community.
By showcasing the talents and educating the public about what disabled athletes can achieve, people will realize that a wheelchair is not an obstacle rather it is what enables the person to participate not only in sports but in society.
