We partner with the Ghana Health Service to fund community health and outreach projects at the H.O.P.E. Center, a primary health clinic in Ho, Ghana. The principle project that began in 2006 is used to fortify the diets of malnourished children in the Ho area with protein and vegetable supplements in conjunction with promoting sustainability through seed distribution.
In Ho, the local diet of consists of very carbohydrate-heavy meals that often lack protein content necessary for proper growth and nutrition. As a result, a recent study has shown that 45% of children under the age of 5 in the Ho region are underweight for their height. As an intervention, we have established a child nutrition program, which teaches mothers how to properly supplement the diets of their children with protein-rich soybeans.
The program recently began training mothers in two of eight neighboring communities to become peer educators, monitoring the progress of soybean crops and growth of underweight children in their villages. Recently, a new phase to the project has been added incorporating vegetable crop monitoring and distribution to mothers of malnourished children.
This project will improve the quality of clinical care through the diagnostic lab, and will reduce child malnutrition in Ho, from 45% to 15%, over the next five years.
I came to work here for the Nutrition Program. The way we serve the community really makes an impact and I love seeing it every day with the mothers and children that come into the H.O.P.E. Center.
