Help Pakistan speed up recovery from the floods

The growth of RedR’s programme in Pakistan continues with a total of  308 humanitarian aid workers participating in our training in the last quarter of 2010.  With 97% of those trained being National Staff, RedR has maintained our commitment to building capacity locally for greater sustainability.

Coursework delivered (Oct – Dec 2010):

• Essentials of Humanitarian Practice (2 trainings)
• Introduction to Do No Harm Framework (2 trainings)
• Certificate in Security Management (1 training)
• Hostage Incident Management (1 training)
• Driver Safety and First Aid (3 trainings)

We are so thankful for the support of our donors who make our capacity-building work possible.

We are pleased to report that our work in Pakistan is making an impact and we have our donors to thank for that!  RedR is responding to the disaster by delivering urgently needed skills training to relief workers involved in the humanitarian response. Our courses include Essentials of Humanitarian Practice, Security Guard Training and Travel Safety and First Aid.  

These highly specialised training courses have been completed by relief workers from 27 local and international humanitarian agencies.  This means that these workers are now equipped to share their knowledge, therefore increasing our capacity-building impact by multiples. We are receiving requests for trainings on a daily-basis.   During the month of October, the number of participants is expected to increase even further with the arrival of new organizations.

In addition to our training we are now providing half-day, in-country security briefings to newly arrived response staff.  We are so thankful for the support of our donors who make our capacity-building work possible.

In Pakistan's worst hit areas, such as Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, the Swat Valley and the districts of Shangla and Tank, aid agencies have reported that entire villages have been washed away by floodwaters and landslides. There is now urgent need for temporary shelters, clean drinking water and toilets, as well as medical care and basic food items.

To respond to the situation, RedR in Pakistan is now scheduling training and support for local and international aid workers so that they can help the affected population. Courses will focus on humanitarian practice in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector - now urgent given the reports of outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.
