The REBUILD globallly (RG) workshop and training center provides much more than jobs to women in Port-au-Prince. The impact of our social enterprise runs much deeper. By focusing on sustainability through living-wage employment, RG is also able to to look at our future workforce and support the youth in our community by offering academic scholarships through our Apprenticeship Program.
Djenica came to RG with a set of circumstances that set her apart from other Apprentices. At only 14 years old, Djenica works as a live-in cook and servant for an elderly woman in Port-au-Prince. Born one of 12 children in the Haiti’s rural countryside, Djenica’s poverty-stricken parents essentially sold her to help support themselves and their other children. She has not seen her parents or her siblings since 2010. Unfortunately, children and young adults with situations like Djenica’s are all too common in Port-au-Prince.
Since becoming a RG Apprentice this fall Djenica has blossomed. Once shy and soft spoken, Djenica is now flourishing with the leadership and confidence building modules RG’s program provides. Only attending school sporadically her entire life, Djenica is currently in the first grade—and impressing our tutors with her quick problem solving and critical thinking skills! Because of the REBUILD Apprenticeship Program, not only is Djenica receiving a life-changing academic scholarship, future job training, and leadership classes, she is also receiving support and encouragement from Haitian and international role modules who care deeply about Djenica and believe in her ability to thrive and succeed.
With an education and the life skills that REBUILD is providing to Djenica, she has the opportunity to build a whole new life and when Djenica turns 18 years old, she is guarenteed a job at the RG workshop. She is an amazing and strong young woman who is persevering in the face of unbearable challenges. Djenica’s story is still in the making, but we know to expect big things from her.
We also know when we employ the mothers of children like Djenica, these stories can be different and lives can be different. We are so grateful for your support that gives children and families a chance to rewrite their stories. Thank you for helping us end poverty one job at a time and making an impact through education, one child at a time.
The RG family
As this year has progressed, REBUILD globally has received a remarkable opportunity for growth, yet was also victim to a crime that threatened the livelihoods of our artisans, street children and apprentices.
Last month our artisan workshop was broken into and vandalized while an international corporation threatened the insurance of our donated modular buildings on site. After an inspiring commitment to justice enacted by the REBUILD artisans and community, local authorities signed to back the buildings on site allowing the artisans to continue their gratifying work.
Before this attack on the REBUILD shop, the United Nations awarded us with a grant that allows us to have the monetary capacity to employ NINETEEN more artisan women! This is a great opportunity to further our reach and help mend the community of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. One of the most exciting aspects of this grant is that we are employing the mothers of the boys in our street child program. What we have learned in Haiti, is that most of the children living on the streets are not orphaned, it is that their (mostly single moms) do not have jobs and therefore can not take care of them. Therefore, it is our mandate to employ these women and get these children off the streets for good!
YOU can help us with this mission! The vandalism of our workshop last month put us a few steps behind as we intended to hire more women, but your commitment to help keep artisan women employed can change lives forever. We are still in need of replacement shoe making tools and equipment, as well as fuel for our generator.
With the help of our devoted patrons and supporters like you, we have come so far with our work and mission. We are excited to welcome our new cohort of artisans and look forward to increasing our productivity and community outreach.
This Wednesday, June 13, Global Giving will match 40% of all donations given to REBUILD Globally. This means that your $50.00 donation will automatically become $70.00! At a time where our organization has overcome continuous hurdles and obstacles, your support will enable us to continue building our physical capacity and work environment.
We encourage you to follow our facebook to stay up to date on all RG happenings and watch our videos on youtube! Our NEW online sandal shop is up and running, visit http://www.rebuildglobally.org/products-page/ to order your pair of REBUILDERs!
The REBUILD Team
Thanks to your continued support for REBUILD Globally. We have continued to be a growing influence in the Port-au-Prince area. It is your belief in sustainable development that has allowed us to add additional projects that not only educate our artisans, street children and the community at large; but has enabled us to combat an issue that we face daily in Haiti: food insecurity. With the help of some amazing volunteers and generous donors, REBUILD has recently completed our Gardening Initiative! At "Jouden Tout Moun" which in Creole means "Everybody's Garden", we are growing a variety of vegetables, starches and fruits and currently constructing a small out door kitchen to teach our Apprentices and street children proper nutrition and cooking methods. Aside from a fresh source of produce for healthy lunches, we are also hiring on a new person for a full-time cooking position! This will help us provide food for our artisans and those in need in our immediate community; and we're providing one more person with a living wage job. Check out this video to see the process of building and implementing our new initiative!
Our apprenticeship initiative has given our artisans the opportunity to become role models and instructors to the boys in our apprentice initiative. The boys spend time each week with an artisan who helps to train them. Hopefully these boys will be artisans too! It's with your support that we can guarantee this opportunity to these young men! Be sure to stay connected with our efforts by liking our facebook page and following our YouTube channel. Also, you can continue to support the artisans by representing their work and purchasing a pair of sandals from our new etsy store!
