Working with the Government of Lesotho and USAID, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is ensuring access to HIV services and accelerating steps toward the elimination of pediatric AIDS.
Lesotho has one of the highest rates of HIV prevalence in the world. Coupled with its complex and difficult landscape, it is incredibly challenging to reach remote communities of children, women, and families, in need of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services.
Local pony riders of Lesotho are playing an integral role in the Foundationas HIV prevention, care, and treatment initiatives. Couriers traverse rugged terrain on horseback to transport blood samples and medicines in areas otherwise unreachable.
The pony program, and other creative innovations devised by the Foundation and its partners, are increasing access to HIV services, and ultimately supporting the elimination of pediatric AIDS in the countries hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic.
