It was with great excitement that GHA added our first 3 preschool classes to our offerings in 2023, with one more anticipated in the new year.
According to USAID statistics, nearly 1/2 of rural, indigenous youngsters in Guatemala will fail first grade. Only 30% who begin first grade will complete 3rd grade, and 76% will drop out before finishing primary school. Early childhood education provides a stimulating and structured environment for these kids, strengthening their cognitive development, as well as their social and emotional skills. It creates a solid foundation for future learning.
The additions bolster GHA’s already strong support of students, including tutoring classes, enrichment opportunities for children, very popular workshops for women, and scholarships for all levels. This year we’re proud to have had 11 students at university level, studying nursing, education, business and social work. 80% of Indigenous Guatemalans fall below the poverty level. Improved education is an essential tool for later success, a means of promoting equity and social justice.
We continue with our floor builds, too, aiming for laying a couple per month.
Thanks for your support.
