In our most recent project report we told you about some of the challenges we had been facing on this project, including the damage caused by the unusually heavy seasonal rains and the critical need for the new girls' toilets following the collapse of an existing block.
Since then, we've been able to resume work on the boys' toilet block, having repaired the damage to the foundations caused by the rains, and in the last couple of weeks have commenced work on the girls'.
Given that we were only able to excavate the waste pits to just over half of the targeted depth of 20ft, we took the decision to excavate a secondary overflow waste pit parellel to both toilets, connected by underground waste pipes. This has increased the overall cost of the project by around 20% but should ensure a much longer lifespan for the toilets.
We have completed groundworks on both the main and secondary pits for the boys' toilets and work has now started on the main superstructure, including the concrete slab 'cap' for the overflow pit, whilst we continue to build the foundations and excavate the pits for the girls' toilets.
We believe we have now secured the necessary funding to complete the toilets (although these are now likely to be completed closer to the end of next term than the start) however we continue to raise funds for the hand-wash facilities and landscaping works which form a critical part of this project.
