The program will support over 1,700 people in rural Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to increase income by making and marketing crafts. Producers will be linked with key markets using e-commerce technology.
Periodic droughts and few job opportunities make it difficult for communities, especially women, to survive on subsistence farming. More than half of the people in the three countries are living on $1 a day or less. Alternative income strategies are needed to bridge the gap that will ensure survival in the lean months. Although all three countries are known for diverse wildlife and game parks, tourism benefits only a small percentage of the overall population in selected areas.
Train communities in product pricing and develop products with market appeal; build capacity of youth as intermediaries in information communication technologies; 3) strengthen existing facilities to implement an e-commerce system.
Increase the income of rural communities, mostly women, through production and marketing of traditional African handicrafts including woven baskets and textiles. Product design improvement and developed marketing channels.
