Project Report | Oct 31, 2023
TFT Report 2023

By Mustafa Sheta | General Manager

We are pleased to provide you with an overview of The Freedom Theatre's activities and accomplishments over the past two years. We have participated in various international events, collaborated with local and international organizations, and received invaluable support that has helped us further our mission in promoting Palestinian theatre and cultural exchange.

Participation in the Carthage Theatre Festival 2021:
At the end of 2021, The Freedom Theatre had the privilege to participate in the Carthage Theatre Festival in Tunisia. Our artistic production, "Keffiyeh / Made in China," was a significant opportunity for us to build a strong network between Palestine and the Arab world. This platform allowed us to showcase our work to Arab artists and the wider community, promoting Palestinian theatre on an international stage.

Support from Palestinian Cultural Ministry:
To make our participation in the Carthage Theatre Festival possible, we received crucial support from the Palestinian Cultural Ministry. This support encompassed various elements, including transportation, per diem, Tunisia visas, rehearsals, and COVID-19 examinations. Your assistance was instrumental in helping us acquire costumes, facilitating transport for a Palestinian company, housing company members, and training Palestinian apprentices in stage management and set design.

Challenges in Egypt:
Unfortunately, our journey was not without challenges. In Egypt, we encountered difficulties in entering the country, with no clear or logical reasons provided for the denial of entry.

Recognition and Awards:
Despite these challenges, we managed to shine in other international events. We received an invitation to perform in Baghdad at "The Elephant," a competition involving Arab countries. During this event, we proudly earned the titles of Best Director and Best Actor at the Street Theater Festival, establishing our presence in the region.

Success in Jordan:
Our success continued with an invitation to perform "The Elephant" in Jordan, where we were honored with the special jury award for Best Theatre Team at the 20th Zarqa Summer Festival for Arab Theater in September 2022. Furthermore, "The Elephant" play was recognized with the award for Best Theatre Performance at the third Palestine National Theatre Festival in 2022, organized by the Palestinian Cultural Ministry.

Building a Cultural Network:
Our participation in these international events provided us with the unique opportunity to build a cultural network and collaborate with other cultural centers. This has given us a platform to showcase our work not only to Palestinian and Arab artists but also to an international audience.

Continued Support:
Aside from your generous support, we have received assistance from the Palestinian Higher Council for Youth and Sports, Ashtar Theatre, and the Open Society Foundations through the Palestinian Performing Arts Network. This collective support has been crucial in enabling our success.

Looking Ahead:
In 2023, we plan to organize a tour of "Keffiyeh / Made in China" in the West Bank, further expanding the reach of our work and cultural exchange, after Gaza War.

In closing, we express our sincere gratitude for your unwavering support, which has been instrumental in our journey to share Palestinian theatre and culture with the world. We look forward to future collaborations and opportunities to make a positive impact through the arts.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
