Summary

This project offers young women from a highly deprived community a way of securing a good job with a reputable employer. Born into struggling, sometimes chaotic families, these young women have few opportunities to improve their lives. This Hair & Beauty course offers training and experience in a reputable salon and a guaranteed interview with a good employer. This will give them secure employment, providing a clear route out of poverty and increase opportunities for the whole family.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Young women from this poor community find it very difficult to get good jobs. Many end up unemployed or hustling for casual work on a daily basis. Most jobs are gained through word-of-mouth, but poor families don't know the right people. There are many jobs available in hair salons, but people from deprived communities don't get them. A decent job is the most powerful step to escaping poverty, and this project will provide young women the chance to get a good job with a reputable employer.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project provides Hair & Beauty training to young women in a highly disadvantaged community. The course begins in the local community and then gradually moves to a Colombo salon, ensuring they develop confidence in going to the city, a big step for young women who rarely leave their neighbourhood.. Once they complete the course the young women will be guaranteed interviews at reputable salons. Those having childcare commitments will be helped to set up their own businesses working from home.

Potential Long Term Impact

These young women will gain skills and experience in Hair & Beauty which means they will be able to earn a good living.. Recommendations to future employers will open doors that usually remain firmly shut to young people from deprived communities. Having a steady job with a good employer will provide these young people a stable income and the potential for career progression, which will help to lift their whole family out of poverty.

Project Message

It is no exaggeration when I say that I see a transformation in these young women. They are brimming with confidence, have plans for the future and aspirations for a life different to their mothers.
