This project provides 30 children each summer with fun activities, food and lodging and 100 volunteers with food, tents, and other supplies at Szadvar Castle in rural Hungary.
Szogliget is located in one of the poorest counties. After 1990, state sponsored factories and mines closed their gates leaving many people without jobs. The population fell below 800 as young people moved to the cities to find jobs. The village has a famous but neglected medieval castle and is located next to the UNESCO listed Aggtelek NP. The project aims to create a tourist destination by restoring part of the castle and bring 30000 visitors per year who will strengthen the local economy.
The project will clean up the castle grounds, restore a tower to be a viewpoint, place signs and trash bins along the road, and professionals will hold summer camps for students about historic monument preservation and enviroment protection
The project will allow children from different countries learn about each other's culture and history. The people of Szogliget will able to provide services to visitors and provide a better life for their families
I have a disability that makes it hard for me to find a sustainable job. We have seen a steady increase in visitors and I now have the opportunity to make a living by coordinating the village rentals
