Sumayya is a 42-year-old single mother of three children. She narrates a heartbreaking incident where she gave her daughter an overdose of medication because she could not read the prescription correctly. This nearly cost her daughter's life and resulted in her daughter losing a limb.
Sumayya comes from a village where girls were not allowed to attend school. She missed out on an education because of this. Realizing literacy's importance, Sumayya has joined a literacy class with 49 other women at a community learning center.
When asked to share her story, Sumayya emphasizes that being illiterate caused her immense guilt and pain over nearly killing her child due to a medication mistake. She wants to seize the opportunity to become literate to give her children, especially her daughters, the education she never had. Sumayya encourages others to educate their children, girls, and boys, so they don't have to endure the suffering illiteracy caused her.
Millions of women around the world lack the essential skill of literacy. This isn't just a missed opportunity – it's a barrier to a brighter future. Women who can't read and write face employment, healthcare, and community participation limitations.
Together, we can unlock the potential of women everywhere. Donate today and empower a woman to read, write, and reach her full potential!
