Summary

Pakistan is one of eight countries worldwide that spend less than 2% of GDP on education. Public spending on education, a vital input for improvement in access and quality, is mere 1.5% of GDP. READ Foundation Pakistan is providing quality education to more than 75,000 underprivileged children, including 8000 orphans, through a network of 342 schools. To meet the quality standards and continually provide access to poor orphans is a challenge for which READ requires support of donors.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In Pakistan, on average, 32%, 40.5% and 67.7% of rural girls aged 5-10, 10-14 and 15-19 respectively are out of school. Less than half of students ever complete primary school. Pakistan is feared not to achieve the MDGs for universal primary education by 2015. Earthquake in 2005, floods in 2010 and 2011 and miserable security situations have added to the number of children who are orphans and extremely poor. Rigorous efforts are needed to support the education sector in this country.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project aims to extend access to quality education for the most vulnerable orphan children. READ Foundation has a network of 342 schools where children get an enabling learning environment to groom and become productive citizens of the society. At the moment READ is supporting over 8000 orphan children in these schools and their continuity in schools is reliant on the support of generous donors who take care of their day-to-day school needs. This project will help 100 orphan children.

Potential Long Term Impact

Education can and will transform the lives of young children. Poor orphans without an access to better education and care are vulnerable to child labour and other social ills. Support through this project will save 100 orphans and keep the hope alive for many others. This support would encourage larger communities to develop a habit of giving for good, take care of children especially orphans. Project will contribute towards the improvement of education statistics of Pakistan.
